3D Going Away?

I found a link on Gizmodo about the reasons why 3D movie technology will most likely phase out in the future.

Respected film editor Walter Murch wrote a letter to film critic Roger Ebert of The Chicago Sun-Times. He describes some of the issues with 3D, including the darkness and smallness of the image. The main issue he describes is focus/convergence. When watching a 3D film, the audience focuses on the plane of the screen, but must converge their eyes at various distances depending on what the effect is. This puts a strain on our eyes, which is why many people can become dizzy or get headaches after a while.

I agree with Murch in that 3D will eventually phase out. There have been many 3D films released within the last few years. The most recent 3D film I saw in theaters was Despicable Me. However, there have been several films that have been released in 3D that I chose to watch in the regular format, such as Toy Story 3, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and Tangled. I dare to say that I enjoyed each of these films just as much in plain old 2D as I would have in 3D. For me, a film is about the story. The visuals and special effects are secondary. As cool as those things may be, I don't think it's worth the extra money (movie tickets are so expensive now anyway) just to see a movie in 3D.

  1. I enjoy 3D movies and haven't gotten a headache or dizziness from them, however, I could see how some people could. I do agree the 3D will phase out very soon because holographs/holograms have already been created (I actually posted about holographs in my most recent blog), but as for the headaches and dizziness, I am sure they have a warning about it and it is just like anything else because nothing will be perfect and have no repercussions.
