I found this really useful article on Gizmodo that shares tips and gives links about how to rip, watch, organize, stream, and store media from your CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs.
Over the past five years media has become increasingly digital. Most people don't even purchase physical CDs anymore; we simply download music from places like iTunes and Amazon. Movies, TV shows, and other media are also becoming more prominently available to access online. I think eventually people will get rid of these ways of physically storing media. However, there's a lot of media on VHS and cassette tapes (anyone remember those?) that aren't readily available digitally, so if people want to retain that media they need to convert it.
The article also discusses cloud storage, which we've discussed in this class. Maybe someday people won't even need to store media on hard drives; everything will be in the cloud. On the one hand, this frees up storage space because media files are generally pretty large. You would also be able to access your media from any computer or mobile device. On the other hand, can we rely on the security of these cloud-based storage sites? Last week Brett posted a link in his blog about the Amazon cloud player, and how it has not only run into legal issues with uploading music, but also how users had issues with the playback quality.
I think storing and sharing music and video will continue to become more digital, but users still need to take caution when uploading and sharing media files.
